1.20) Presidential election 2011 总统选举 2011

Frog A: To me, presidential election is just an outcome predictable political event however the recent development concerning who will participate in presidential election is interesting.
Frog B: I agree. I do follow the development too. First is the famous ‘2 weeks’ phase, if you are asked to wait for 2 weeks mean the persons are not contesting or not seeking for re-election. It happened twice!
Frog A: I got it, so for free spirit, another meaning is free to participate or not to participate; more interesting is one candidate hopes that he can continue to BOND with the people after he had gone through the mini-BOND saga with the people. They want to be close to the people, another idea from the candidate is to turn the Istana to Central Park if elected!
Frog B: Well there are more actions, one candidate even travelled to Indonesia (Batam) to meet our citizens there. We know that candidates of Indonesia presidential election sang and even produced song album, we also have a candidate is singing to the people too. (See Video)
Frog A: Do you know all the candidates are having the same background relating to ‘Lightning-strike’ in one way or another.
Frog B: Exactly, the winner has to work with ‘Lightning-strike’ eventually.
青蛙甲：对我来说，总统大选的结果只是一个可预见的政治事件然而最近的发展有关谁将参加总统选举变的很有趣。
青蛙乙：我同意。我也跟近它的发展。首先是著名的“2个星期”的说法，如果参选人说他需要2个星期来作决定，他的意思是他不参选或不寻求连任。已经发生两次了。
青蛙甲：我知道了，所谓自由精神，另一个意思是他有参选或不参选的自由;更有趣的是一名候选人为人民解决mini-BOND(迷你债券)事件之后。希望他能继续和人民BOND(结合)起来。他们全都希望能贴近百姓，另一名候选人的想法是如果当选他想把总统府变成中央公园。

From now till 27th Aug 2011, we can hear speeches from all eligible candidates and I suppose a great deal of time will be centered on elected president’s power from the candidates. On the other hand, I would like to share the summary of what I have read as follows;
Elected president has custodial powers not executive powers. Complications may arise if a president seeks to carve out a more activist role – “powerful presidency”. Lee Kuan Yew’s fellow old-guard minister Lim Kim San, who chaired the Council of Presidential Advisors from 1992 to 2003, he understood that the president’s role was limited to stopping “a rogue government from doing wrong things when it is obviously foul play”. According to him, when it is a judgment of whether this or that is the better way, just leave it to the government.
从现在至2011年8月27日，我们可以听到所有合格候选人的发言，我想他们将花大部分的时间以民选总统的权力为中心来讨论。另一方面，我想分享我的阅读总结如下：

The towering Marina Bay Sands (MBS) is making a bigger splash than the water-spouting Merlion as a Singapore tourist icon. More than 30 of those polled expect MBS to overtake the Merlion as a key tourist icon because of the attention the Integrated Resort (IR) gets in oversea media. However, as some tourism experts noted, it will be some time before the Merlion is fully replaced, given that is has a larger share of the souvenir market. Merlion mementoes, from chocolates and biscuits to magnets and figurines, are commonly sold here. MBS souvenirs, sold only at the IR, include key chains and mugs, but nothing edible.

Frog A : Does Merlion need this 'damaged by lightning' event to attract more visitors?
Frog B : I am not sure. I am wondering if the tower of Pisa is not leaning, will it still be attractive to visitors? To me, the tower itself is quite ordinary!

There are not one, but three, merlions - one full-sized and two babies - perched in a park in the city centre of Hakodate. The Hakodate is situated in Hokkaido of Japan. It was built by 64-year-old Masaru Yanagisawa - a hotelier, fishery boss and philanthropist. He is also chairman of the Singapore Association, whose members are mainly Japanese with an interest in Singapore.

The unique art installation is designed by Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi as part of the Singapore Biennale 2011 art showcase. The Merlion Hotel is a single five-star hotel suite temporarily constructed around the eight-metre tall iconic sculpture at One Fullerton. It is fully-fitted with a double bed, bathroom, amenities, personalised check-in, and even a dedicated Merlion Hotel butler. After spending the night, guests will be invited to enjoy breakfast at the nearby Fullerton Hotel.

Frog A: Merlion is an unfortunate icon, it got struck by lightning in March 2009. I suppose it was “Act of God” though some people felt it was due to negligent placement of its head in a lightning strike zone.
Frog B: I remember too, that unfortunate incident attracted strong interest from the public as well as tourists.
Frog A: It really an unfortunate icon, two years later that is March this year (2011), idea of so called Merlion Hotel is in fact allowing couples having sex on his head! It definitely is not “Act of God”, but “Act of people”. I think our national icon reserved better treatment!
Frog B: Worst of all, some are suggesting that it is high time for Merlion, the vomiting half-lion half-fish, to retire as tourist icon and to be taken over by MBS (Marina Bay Sands), which is relating to casino!

Frog A : There are many reasons for migration, I suppose one of the reasons here is due to our country is congested, shortage of land and most of us stay in high rise building instead of landed houses.
Frog B : It happens to the dead too. Cemetery will be gradually replaced by columbarium complex due to constraints of burial space…
Frog A : No worries, the dead can also be migrated too, to country with plenty of land…
Frog B : Yes, I remember! I have seen the advertisement before.
Frog A: It is a sensitive issue, I remember minister who was in charge of Health portfolio was clearly misunderstood by the people. It is true that it is cheaper to send elderly parents to nursing homes across the causeway.
Frog B: The same minister is no more in charge of Health portfolio but the National Development portfolio, and his job is related to housing now!
Frog A: Oh, it is interesting! In view of current crazy property price.....

青蛙乙：同一位部长但是他已经不是负责卫生部门,而是国家发展部门,他现在的工作是关系到人民的住房！

An unusual advertisement appeared in the Straits Times: It offered burial plots in Melbourne, Australia. The Chinese cemetery in Melbourne, called Song He Yuan, is landscaped and decorated in “Tang dynasty” style.The advantage of being buried at Song He Yuan is the burial plots are forever, unlike in Singapore where graves are exhumed after 15 years to make space for more burials.

Frog A: 'Little red dot' has been very successful comparing to many countries, I suppose the reasons are due to 'Little red dot' dares to be different from the rest of the world and 'Little red dot' has firm belief of doing the right thing. For ministerial pay, is it "Top of the world" or may be "Out of the world"?Frog B: Whatever it is I think it is high time to.....to "Shake the box"!
Frog A: We all know well, if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys! We have to be reasonable.....
Frog B: I am not sure, it is very subjective. It was once commented that $600,000 pay was peanut! (see movie below)
Frog A: In this case, It is really a hot potato! Very tough for the review committee!
Frog B: Relating to salary, there is another issue concerning minimum wages. 'Little red dot' has no plan to adopt although many countries inclusive of super powers have already implemented. For this, I hope 'Little red dot' is not "Out of the world" but "Model of the world".

Frog A : For Singapore long term interest, the writer has put up a good analysis to advise Mr.Chiam and Mr. Low to stay put in their SMCs rather than to contest in GRCs.
Frog B : Yes, he present a very balanced view on the impact to ruling party as well as opposition parties. I hope both of them Chiam and Low will seriously consider his advice.

Some commented that volunteering is fine, so long as they keep it up after their kids get into the school. In fact, most parents don't bother to "volunteer" once a place is secured for the child. This is the same as paying for a place in the school, not in cash, but in kind.

Schools are also very careful in accepting volunteers these days. The children of these volunteers are lumped into phase 2B, also subject to the 1 km limit, if more children than places with 1 km, also must ballot. No guarantee

Frog B : Yes, I also remember many countries had killed thousands and thousands of chickens and ducks whenever there was a bird flu case, so we are thinking that it is a matter of time we will have bird flu outbreak since birds are flying freely across many countries.

There are 15 different H types (H1, H2, H3, etc) and 9 different N types (N1, N2, N3, etc). The avian influenza in poultry which affected humans is caused by the H5N1 subtype of Influenza A virus.
In Jan 04, health authorities in Vietnam and Thailand reported their first human cases of infection with avian influenza caused by an H5N1 strain. The cases in humans are directly linked to outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in poultry initially reported in Korea in mid-December 2003 and subsequently confirmed in an additional seven Asian countries (Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, China, Laos and Indonesia).
As of April 05, there have been 89 reported human cases resulting in 52 deaths. Based on these figures, the fatality rate is 60% with Vietnam and Cambodia continuing to report new cases.
